This study showed that in veterans with treatment-resistant PTSD, symptom improvement induced by HBOT was sustained.

“An additional significant improvement in mood and cognitive function was demonstrated at the long-term follow-up, beyond the improvement observed at the short-term follow-up. Improvements in cognition and mood may reflect a change in the way people perceive the world, as safety and self-esteem can only be rebuilt after improvement in PTSD core symptoms. Long-term improvement was also supported by subjective improvement, as assessed by item 28 in the CAPS-5 questionnaire; most participants felt that further improvement in symptoms occurred since the short-term assessment. …he current study is the first to evaluate the long-term effect of HBOT on veterans with military-related PTSD. ”

“Treatment response rates were 68% vs 4% at the end of HBOT/sham treatment (P < .001) and 61% vs 4% at the end of follow-up, respectively (P < .001). … A significant improvement in all CAPS symptom clusters was demonstrated in the HBOT arm, while no improvement was seen in the sham group.”

“Following HBOT, there was a significant improvement in CAPS-V scores and no change in the control (F = 30.57, P<0.0001, Net effect size = 1.64). Significant improvements were also demonstrated in BSI and BDI scores (F = 5.72, P = 0.024 Net effect size = 0.89, and F = 7.65, P = 0.01, Net effect size = 1.03). Improved brain activity was seen in fMRI in the left dorsolateral prefrontal, middle temporal gyri, both thalami, left hippocampus and left insula. The DTI showed significant increases in fractional anisotropy in the fronto-limbic white-matter, genu of the corpus callosum and fornix.”
